Alberta Launches a Digital Health Card
A secure, convenient and durable alternative to paper health cards
On August 29, 2025 the Alberta government announced that digital health cards stored on a mobile phone are available to Albertans as a replacement for your current paper health care card.
Alberta is launching a digital health card that can be presented at hospitals, clinics and other medical settings using a mobile phone.
The cards will be protected by “strong encryptions, ensuring that Albertan’s personal information stays private and accessible only to them,” noted government representatives in a public announcement on August 29, 2025.
Digital health cards will be available to all eligible Albertans 14 years old and up. Parents and guardians can add their children’s mobile health cards to their own ‘Alberta Wallet’, as can spouses and interdependent partners.
For Albertans who are not ready to make the change to digital health cards or do not have a mobile phone, paper health cards will still be usable for the foreseeable future.
Alberta Medical Association (AMA) President Shelley Duggan called the digital card a "logical" move, benefiting patients by ensuring they always have their health information accessible via their phone, which is less likely to be lost and is password-protected, offering more security than a paper format.
Digital card eligibility
You must be
• 14 years or older, plus
• a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, with a permanent home in Alberta
In the future, the digital health card will be available to all residents of Alberta who are eligible for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) coverage.
Getting your digital health card
You will need a verified Alberta.ca Account and a verified MyHealth Records account to access the ‘Alberta Wallet’ and get your digital health card.
Once you have set-up both these accounts, download the ‘Alberta Wallet’ through the Apple App store or Google Play to your mobile phone. The ‘Alberta Wallet’ on your mobile phone is where you will access your digital health card.
